Embarking on a journey: First time with blog

Recently, I attend a new class called ICT. It was the first time that I try to use blog to record what we have learned and reflect on. Firstly I was curious about this mode of learning, so on the recommendation of my teacher I went to read Carla Arena's blog, and I got a deeper understanding of blogging. Blogging has become a ubiquitous platform for expression, information-sharing, and connection. Yet, stepping into this realm for the first time can be both exhilarating and daunting. In my first blog, I will analyze Arena's blog and thus give my own understanding of blogging.

First, I learned that students use blogs not only to improve language skills, but also to be exposed to "concepts" related to writing skills. As Arena says, "Students will have to get used to the blogging experience to learn how to properly answer posts, how to cite, and how to establish their own blogging tone through their posts." Additionally, after blogging, students can interact by commenting to each other, thus fully engaging in dialogue and filtering information by reflecting on the quality of their writing and the language they use.Join me on a journey as we delve into the adventure of exploring the world of blogging for the very first time. From the initial spark of inspiration to the triumphs and challenges along the way, let's navigate this uncharted territory together.

For many people, the decision to start a blog often begins with a burst of inspiration, the realisation that their voice matters and that their story deserves to be heard. This can be triggered by a passion for a particular topic, a desire to share personal experiences, or a desire for creative expression. One of the most significant benefits of incorporating blogging into language education is its ability to foster authentic communication. Unlike traditional assignments that may feel disconnected from real-life contexts, blogging allows students to express themselves on topics of personal interest, share their experiences, and engage in genuine conversations with peers and native speakers. In my case, what I learnt in the classroom and what I encountered that intrigued me were worthy of being recorded, while my views being seen by others and people discussing and exchanging ideas with each other was in itself an assimilation and application of knowledge. In addition, blogging in English helps me to practice my writing skills and critical thinking, which is helpful for me as a language learner.

In addition, blogging allows language learners to make connections and share these ideas and discoveries with others regardless of time and space; we can throw out our ideas, get responses from others, take suggestions from others, and involve more people in the process. Learning becomes more personalized and certainly more meaningful. Arena believes that students learning language through blogging are creating meanings that are meaningful to them because they are constructing those meanings rather than having them repeat bits and pieces.

Moreover, blogging builds digital literacy, a competency that is critical in today's digital environment. From learning to navigate blogging platforms and multimedia tools to understanding concepts such as digital citizenship and netiquette, students develop the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Like any journey, my foray into blogging has been marked by moments of triumph and challenges. Celebrating milestones such as reaching a certain number of followers or receiving positive feedback on a post has been immensely rewarding. However, it hasn't been without its hurdles. From writer's block to navigating the ever-changing landscape of digital marketing, there have been moments of frustration and self-doubt along the way. Yet, with each challenge comes an opportunity for growth and learning. Embracing setbacks as part of the journey has been instrumental in building resilience and perseverance.

As I reflect on my journey thus far, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences, connections, and insights blogging has brought into my life. It's a reminder that the decision to embark on this adventure was not merely about sharing content but about embracing a mindset of curiosity, creativity, and community. Looking ahead, I'm excited to continue exploring new avenues of expression, honing my craft, and connecting with fellow bloggers and readers alike. Transforming English Learning and Teaching: the power of AI and VR

This week I learned how to use AI and VR in English Class and I tried to use an app, ELSA Speak, in language learning. ELSA Speak is Designed to help users improve their English pronunciation and speaking skills and it serves as a virtual pronunciation coach for learners of English as a second language. The app leverages speech recognition technology and artificial intelligence to analyze users' pronunciation in real-time, providing instant feedback on accuracy, intonation, rhythm, and stress.

ELSA Speak offers a variety of interactive lessons and exercises designed to enhance speaking skills in different contexts, from casual conversations to professional presentations. Users can practice speaking aloud, repeat sentences, engage in dialogues, and participate in speaking challenges—all within the app's intuitive interface.

One of the most valuable aspects of ELSA Speak is its real-time feedback system. As users speak into their device's microphone, the app provides instant feedback on pronunciation accuracy, identifying areas of improvement and offering suggestions for refinement. After exploring ELSA Speak, I become interested in using AI and VR in English Class. In today's digital age, the fusion of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) technologies is reshaping the people's view of English language learning and teaching. From personalized tutoring to immersive language experiences, AI and VR are revolutionizing the way students engage with English, offering unprecedented opportunities for language acquisition and proficiency. In this blog post, we'll explore the transformative potential of AI and VR in English learning and teaching and delve into their practical applications in the classroom and beyond.

AI have the ability to analyze vast amounts of learner data and tailor instruction to individual needs and preferences. AI-powered language learning platforms can assess learners' strengths and weaknesses, track progress over time, and deliver personalized feedback and recommendations. Whether through interactive exercises, adaptive quizzes, or virtual tutors, AI enables learners to receive targeted support and guidance, optimizing their learning experience. Virtual reality (VR) technology transports learners to immersive digital environments where they can engage with English in context. In addition, VR simulations provide realistic scenarios for language practice, ranging from ordering food in a restaurant to traveling in a foreign city, and more. By experiencing language in real-life scenarios, learners can develop communicative competence, cultural awareness, and the acquisition of language skills.

Virtual reality language learning games challenge learners to solve puzzles, complete tasks and overcome obstacles while practising English in a dynamic and immersive environment. By gamifying language learning, VR games can motivate learners and promote active participation in the classroom.

While AI and VR technologies hold great promise for English learning and teaching, it's essential to address issues of accessibility and equity. I think teachers must ensure that all students have equal access to AI and VR resources, regardless of their scores or technological proficiency. By leveraging mobile devices, VR headsets, and internet connectivity initiatives, teachers can bridge the digital divide and empower learners from diverse backgrounds to succeed in English language learning.

As we embrace the transformative potential of AI and VR in English learning and teaching, it's clear that these technologies hold the key to unlocking new possibilities and revolutionizing language education. By harnessing the power of personalized learning with AI, immersive experiences with VR, chatbots, and gamification, teachers can create dynamic and engaging environments where students thrive and succeed in mastering the English language. While AI and VR technologies offer numerous benefits for English learning classes, they also come with certain shortcomings:

1. Implementing artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies in the classroom can be expensive, requiring investments in hardware, software and training for educators. Not all educational institutions have sufficient resources to afford these technologies, leading to disparities in access and opportunities among students.

2. Artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies are not immune to technical glitches and failures. Connectivity issues, software bugs, and hardware failures can disrupt learning activities and frustrate educators and students. Technical support and troubleshooting may be required to resolve these issues in a timely manner. In addition, learning to use these technologies effectively takes time and effort, and some teachers may be overwhelmed by the learning curve associated with the implementation of AI and virtual reality technologies.

3. VR environments can be immersive and engaging, but they can also be overwhelming for some learners. Eyestrain is a common side effect of prolonged VR use.

4. Over-reliance on AI and VR technologies can undermine learners' ability to learn independently and think critically. 

Teachers must balance the use of technology as a tool to enhance learning with the development of essential skills such as problem solving, creativity and independent learning. By acknowledging these shortcomings and actively addressing them, teachers can maximise the benefits of AI and virtual reality technologies while reducing their limitations in the ELL classroom. Integrating these technologies in a thoughtful and ethical manner can enhance the learning experience and enable students to successfully master the English language.

Exploring Assisted Language Learning(MALL): an amazing experience

In our ICT class this week we used the platform "Nearpod" to experience taking a class remotely using our mobile phones. Our group was scheduled to attend a class at Warwick Arts Centre and it was a great experience. We sat on the stairs on the ground floor and the class took place via a screen, so we were free to discuss the class content and ask around the group if we didn't understand something. In my opinion, the advantage of having a class via a screen is that you don't have to worry about the sound of the discussion interfering with the teacher's lecture. 

To prove that we were taking the class remotely, we also took pictures of ourselves and, with permission, of strangers around us who were studying. 


It was not only an interesting experience, but it also triggered me to think about learning English remotely with my mobile phone.

In this blog post, we will explore the evolution of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) with its predecessor, computer-assisted language learning (CALL), and delve into its implications for English learners and teachers.

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) initially focused on using computers to supplement language learning through interactive exercises, multimedia resources, and computer-based assessments. While CALL provided valuable opportunities for language practice and engagement, it was constrained by the limitations of desktop technology, such as lack of mobility and accessibility. The rise of smartphones has paved the way for a new era in language learning, giving birth to Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). MALL builds upon the foundation laid by CALL but extends learning beyond the confines of the classroom and desktop computer. With the ubiquity of mobile devices, learners now have the freedom to engage with language learning anytime, anywhere, transform language learning into a part of everyday life.

Key Features and Benefits of MALL

1. 1. One of the main advantages of MALL is its accessibility. Learners can access language learning resources and activities directly from their smartphone or iPad, removing barriers such as time and location constraints. Whether they are on the go or relaxing at home, learners can take all the time they need to practice their language skills.

2. MALL provides a personalised learning experience based on learners' individual needs and preferences. For example, in Nearpod, a platform that allows learners to adjust their learning pace according to their personal time, learners are able to focus on weak areas, set learning goals and receive targeted feedback.

3. MALL utilises the interactive features of mobile devices to increase engagement and immersion in language learning. Through gamification, multimedia content and interactive exercises, learners can actively participate in the language material, strengthening vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and cultural understanding.

4. Mobile devices can provide many resources for learning languages, such as news articles, podcasts, videos, social media and language exchange platforms, among others, thus facilitating authentic language immersion. Learners can be exposed to authentic language input in context, improving communicative competence and cultural awareness.

5. MALL promotes collaborative learning through social networking, peer interaction and language exchange opportunities. For example, with the APP "Duolingo", learners can connect with other language enthusiasts, join online communities, engage in virtual language exchanges and receive peer feedback, thus fostering a sense of community and motivation to learn.

6. For teachers, MALL offers exciting opportunities to improve instructional effectiveness, reach diverse learning populations, and build digital literacy skills. Teachers can integrate mobile technology into course design, create interactive learning materials, facilitate virtual collaboration, and provide ongoing support and feedback to learners.

Shortcomings for MALL:

While Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) offers numerous benefits, it also has its share of shortcomings:

1. MALL is dependent on the availability of mobile devices and reliable internet connectivity. Learners in regions with limited access to technology or unstable internet connections may face challenges in fully utilizing MALL resources. Besides, learners may encounter difficulties accessing or using certain features depending on their device specifications.

2. Mobile devices typically have smaller screens compared to laptop computers, which can affect the user experience and usability of MALL applications. Complex interfaces or content may be less effective on smaller screens, leading to decreased engagement and comprehension.

3. Learners who are less comfortable or experienced with mobile technology may struggle to navigate MALL applications or troubleshoot technical issues independently and they may miss out on opportunities for spontaneous conversation, nonverbal communication, and cultural immersion.

4. Excessive reliance on mobile devices for language learning may lead to a reduction in real-world communication skills and interpersonal interactions. Learners may become overly dependent on technology for language practice, neglecting opportunities for authentic interaction and cultural engagement.In summary, with its convenience, personalization, interactivity, authenticity and collaboration, MALL has the potential to empower learners and educators in their pursuit of language proficiency and cultural literacy. By acknowledging these shortcomings and actively addressing them, educators and learners can maximize the potential of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) while reducing its limitations.

Enhancing blended teaching with Genially: a wonderful journey

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, the blend of traditional teaching methods with digital tools has become not just advantageous but often necessary. This week in Tilly's class we got to experience how to use "Genially" to prepare for and create classroom projects. Tilly divided us up into groups and our group was in charge of the topic: how to make pancakes. Our group decided to use this topic to teach our students how to write a flow chart in English. After writing our lesson plan, we started to prepare our lesson. My group members and I agreed that we needed to make a mind map of the process of making pancakes, which would help the students see the teacher's ideas clearly and understand how to write each step better. Besides, the mind map would also be useful for the students in the pre-study and post-study phases of the lesson. When Michelle and I were making the mind maps, we found that the good thing about "Genially" is that there are a lot of templates for us to choose from, but the bad thing is that the fonts are really small, and we have to be very close to the computer screen in order to see the words on them. On top of that, due to the internet, many of the features on it would lag when we were operating it. So Michelle and I were pretty cranky during the mind-mapping process, which is still a fun experience to think about now.

One of the key features of Genially is its ability to create interactive content that goes beyond traditional slideshows. For example, I used Genially to create interactive timelines that allowed students to explore historical events at their own pace, as well as interactive infographics that visually represented complex concepts.

Some benefits of using "Genially":
1. Engaging students in active learning: "Genially" offers several features that facilitate collaboration among students, such as collaborative presentations and interactive games. I found that these collaborative activities not only encouraged teamwork but also helped students develop important communication and problem-solving skills.

2. Assessing student understanding is an essential aspect of teaching, and "Genially" provides several tools to support formative assessment. From interactive quizzes to exit tickets, Genially allows educators to gauge student comprehension in real-time and adjust instruction accordingly. 


While Genially offers a wide range of features, integrating it into blended teaching practices may come with some challenges. From mastering the platform's tools to ensuring accessibility for all students, there is a learning curve associated with using "Genially" effectively. 
While Genially offers many benefits for educators, there are some shortcomings or limitations to consider:

1. Learning problems: the interface of "Genially's", although user-friendly, remains challenging to learn for teachers who are not familiar with the platform. It may take some time for teachers to become proficient in using all of Genially's features effectively.

2. Limited customization features: While "Genially" provides a variety of templates and design options, some users may find the customization options somewhat limited compared to other design tools. This could be a drawback for teachers who require highly customized content for their lessons. Here's an example of the video created by my classmates using "Simpleshow"

3. Offline access: "Genially" is primarily a web-based platform, which means that users need to be connected to the internet in order to access and create content. This could be a limitation for teachers working in areas with unreliable internet access or for students who do not have consistent access to the internet outside of school.

4. Technical issues: Like any online platform, "Genially" may from time to time experience technical issues such as server failures or software errors. These issues could disrupt teaching and learning activities if they occur during a lesson or assignment.

While these shortcomings should be considered, they do not negate the many benefits that Genially can offer educators in enhancing the blended teaching experience. With careful planning and consideration, educators can leverage Genially's strengths while mitigating its limitations.

In conclusion, "Genially" has the potential to transform the way educators approach blended teaching. By creating interactive and visually appealing content, fostering collaboration among students, and supporting formative assessment, Genially can enhance the learning experience for students and educators alike. While there may be challenges along the way, the dynamic possibilities of "Genially" make it a valuable tool for any teacher looking to innovate in the classroom.
